Best Picture

 (Mac & Cheese Muffins)

From what I hear, The Artist is very deserving of its big win last night, but at this point, I’m more concerned with best food picture from the evening. Our annual Oscar party was one of the best yet, as we asked everyone to bring an appetizer, so we had quite the variety of type and style: Our very own red carpet of food, if you will. I don’t want to toot my own horn (do people still say that?), but my mac & cheese muffins turned out to be quite the camera hogs because they were as attractive as they were tasty. The way I see it, you can’t ever go wrong with this dish – There are so many variations and ways to mix it up, and I loved the idea of bite size portions.

Runners up include:

(Sweet Potato Bruschetta) via my cooking partner in crime, Laura. You can check out her pins here.

(Strawberry Tuxedos) via my MALE cousin. Impressive, right?

Alright, maybe…just maybe my Mac & Cheese Muffins don’t win best picture, but neither did my favorite film of the evening, The Help, so it’s only fair that I nominate myself this time around, ya think? 😉

(By the way, I’m thinking this red carpet should be a permanent staple in all our family gatherings from now on. Grandma really dug it).

What was your favorite Oscar moment/dress/food/nipple slip?

And the Oscar Goes To…

The Help. And that’s it.

Shh, I’m not biased. I’m just infatuated with this movie and rightly so. I see a ton of movies, as I am a sucker for the ways the previews can draw you in. I also rarely let a poor or positive review affect me in any way, as I like to come to my own conclusions. For instance, it’s possible that I am still the only person who didn’t think “The Hangover” or “Bridesmaids” were the greatest comedies ever released (Losing all control of your bowel movements in a Bridal boutique isn’t a clever idea for a scene. It’s something that happened to the writers after a late night filed with too much In-N-Out and there’s a problem in that itself)

The reviews for “The Help” are overwhelmingly encouraging, but there’s also many who think like Ebert when he says, “I was drawn into the characters and quite moved, even though all the while I was aware it was a feel-good fable, a story that deals with pain but doesn’t care to be that painful.”  Really? I felt a TON of pain. In fact, I haven’t sobbed like that since Russell was awarded the Ellie badge in “Up.” I would go so far as to say that I have never been as moved as I was by Viola Davis in her role as Aibileen. It was a movie that changed how I feel and what kind of person I want to be, and I don’t think any further review is necessary.

Stay tuned for a post-Oscar recap after Sunday. Here’s some Pinterest-party ideas for if you’re hosting a get together, those  of which I will be utilizing for our annual Academy Award party. Yes, my mother is planning on making those cookies. Let your jealousy ensue…

The (Not Always White) Stripes

Some people order the same meal every time they’re in a restaurant. Others visit the same destination every time they have a week off for vacation. I however, cannot go shopping without purchasing something that is striped…every time. I often have intentions of going in a store just to browse and like most women, have trouble leaving empty-handed. I will walk out with a basic t-shirt that I’ve convinced myself that I need….and something striped. Or a new workout tank top that is on sale….and something striped. I repeatedly tell myself, “you don’t need another striped shirt/skirt. It’s not possible to own them in any more colors. In fact, your  friends and family will probably soon disown you if they see you wearing any more stripes.”

But then I remember how great they look with statement necklaces. Or tucked into skirts. Or mixed with other fun prints. Or layered under sweaters. Or mixed with leggings for a comfy laid back kind of day. I am all about versatility and the simplicity of stripes makes choosing an outfit every day go from simply impossible to just plain…simple.

Here’s a few of my favorite Striped images via Pinterest and how I’ve emulated these styles in my everyday life.

Note to self: I am also now obsessed with hot pink.

Unemployed? Pin for the Win.

You can already share your individual style, ideal travel spots, and so many clever ways to break the news that you’re preggers, but now you can share something even more descriptive and intimate with your board’s followers: Your resume. When it comes down to it, Pinterest is all about branding and isn’t that exactly what you aim to to do when you send your customized resume (dear God, please don’t tell me you use a word template) out to hundreds of perspective employers? As someone who has been in the position of combing through resumes to fill various intern positions, I can preach about how vital it is that you do something to differentiate yourself from the rest, whether it’s a resume design you created from scratch, a video submission with a creative podcast you produced, or better yet, a Pinterest entirely dedicated to the branding of your corporate identity.

Helpful hint: Use Resume Bucket or try saving your Word doc as an image…the easiest way to do that is to save it as a pdf and then convert from pdf into image.

Luxury Bridal Expo Chicago

“Congratulations to all the brides in the room…You deserve it” — Actual first words from the bridal fashion show MC last night. After laughing, I spent the next few minutes thinking how absurd that sounded, but I’m not here to criticize (ha, I can’t even take the seriously) Minus the Joan Rivers imitation MC whose dress was too short for her age, we had a wonderful time at the event

The Drury Lane event drew quite a crowd which led my Mom and I to ask ourselves all night how many of those women threw on their fake Cubic Zirconias and just showed up for the free champagne and chocolate fountains? (I know I said I’m not here to criticize, but those who know me know that sarcasm is never far away).  Of course all the vendors were over-eager to grab our attention, but most of them who we did speak with were very helpful. Realistically, we walked away with 3 companies/ideas that I will definitely be pursuing and a very thick, amazing anniversary issue of BRIDES which I spent hours looking through with my parents last night. Honestly, the options are endless and that’s the part that overwhelms me. I would sound spoiled by saying that fewer choices would make the decision process easier, but looking at pictures of everything makes me want to do well, everything.

Here are a few of my favorite vendors/ideas from the event:

(Martini cake from Tipsycake, which also looks like an adorable place for a shower)

Eat, Drink and Be Married

Tonight I will experience my first Chicago Bridal Expo with my beautiful mother. This past fall, we went to the Lake Geneva Bridal Showcase which was held entirely on the tour boats and gave us a ton of great ideas to start out with. (Please note that my mother had signed us up for this prior to MBA’s proposal, as she knew about it ahead of time. How she kept it a secret, I will never know). This kind of organization and enthusiasm are just two of the reasons why she is a great wedding resource that I am lucky to have.

I will post a full re-cap tomorrow, but until then, here are a few of my favorite photos from the Lake Geneva showcase and an inspirational decor idea via “I Think I Wanna Marry You.”

Strawberry Re-Mix

My family goes through strawberries like water, and when I say my family, I am just trying to spread the blame around. It is me who eats them on a daily basis with my Special K Cinnamon Pecan cereal (I am not ashamed of how much I love this cereal. I have definitely eaten it for more than one meal in a day). It is also me who uses strawberries to spice up a breakfast shake or munch on for an afternoon snack. Much like a hit song, strawberries in their original form are the best, but provide a whole new realm of possibilities when they’re re-mixed. Dark chocolate….white chocolate…..hulled with cheesecake….dipped in Nutella (okay, well anything dipped in Nutella)

This past Halloween, I decided to mix my love for the holiday with my favorite fruit and created white chocolate Strawberry ghosts via Pinterest. We have annual pumpkin painting contest and though mine did not win first place, these definitely made up for it.

And for Sunday’s Superbowl soiree, my friend Amy brought a dessert that was even savory enough to draw our football fanatic men away from the tube… chocolate strawberry footballs via Pinterest.

Do you have any favorite strawberry re-mixes?
